Optimisation: SEO

You’ve got a website - now does anyone visit it?

Optimisation is one of the more overlooked elements of a website, but also one of the most crucial. The term “optimisation” can refer to different things, but we attempt to break down the mystique and explain what optimisation or "SEO" is really all about.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Step 1: Keyword Research
Many clients ask us how they can rank well in Google. The answer is, rank well for what? Perhaps the most important aspect of optimisation is to work out what your prospective customers are searching for. You could be #1 in Google for “Downtown Taxi” but if 99% of your prospective customers are searching for “City Taxi” then it’s not doing you much good. We can perform keyword research to find out who is searching for what and from where.

In contrast though it can be worth optimising your website for niche terms in a highly competitive market as it can reap better results being #1 in Google for the less popular terms of “specialist doctor”, “eye doctor” and “doctor on call” than ranking #23 for the far more popular term of “doctor”.

Step 2: Keyword Implementation
Once we know what people are searching for it's time to implement the keywords on the website. Search engines such as Google send out “spiders” to scour websites and their content. The information they collect is processed by Google’s supercomputer to determine what your site is about and how relevant it is to certain subjects.

Therefore we need to structure your website so that the spiders can successfully index and navigate your content and place the most important content in the most important places. For example, most search engines place a lot of emphasis on the words in your headings and the title tag of your page. By knowing how to structure and layout a site you can achieve the full potential the worldwide web has to offer.

Step 3: Everything Else
The main two points are outlined above, but there is a whole ocean of optimisation tools and tactics to explore. Particularly important is inbound links to your site. The best thing is to come in and have a chat with us about it. The main adage to remember regarding SEO though is that your website should contain:

“High quality and relevant content updated regularly”
